Always Looking For Ways To Love You: Calico Skies

Image
As the late, great Vivian Stanshall once said, in the opening lines to the Bonzo Dog Band song, The Sound Of Music, life's like that .... and indeed it is. Recently, I've been listening, almost relentlessly, to Paul McCartney's song, Calico Skies. And just yesterday I received a email stating that Paul will be re-releasing his 1997 album, Flaming Pie, as a super deluxe box set. A wonderful but strange little coincidence. I will say from the start that I am not an expert on Paul McCartney's solo career.  There are some great songs out there that I love. Let Me Roll It, My Brave Face, Hope Of Deliverance, That Would Be Something, Coming Up and his version of No Other Baby are just a few and are listened to frequently on my beloved iPod. Beyond that though, I've not explored greatly. But one song I absolutely loved from the moment I first heard it was Calico Skies. The song made its debut on the Flaming Pie album which was released in 1997. It is a beautifully s...

Maxwell's Silver Hammer: Do You Like It Or Loathe It?

Image
When I think about The Beatles Abbey Road album I cannot think of anything else but summer. I was given my Dad's beat up original pressing with it's ripped cover and it's tendency to skip on Oh! Darling, at the start of my six weeks holiday from school. And I played it relentlessly. It was this time that Here Comes The Sun became, and remains, my favourite song, I fell in love with George Harrison and my Dad, a lifelong Beatle fan, threatened to take the fuse out of my record player if I did not stop playing Here Comes The Sun. It is an album that has always struck me as particularly positive, bright, sunny and, in comparison to some of their albums, somewhat lighthearted. Who cannot admire Something - the ultimate love song ever composed. The very child friendly Octopuses Garden, the sultry and extremely sexy I Want You (She's So Heavy) and the earth shattering piece of musical perfection -The End. However, nestled alongside the tear jerking Golden Slumbers and ...

All Things Must Pass At 50: Love Songs To God And Other Ditties

Image
I can very clearly remember the day. It was a very wet, very cold and extremely grey October afternoon in 1991. I was off school for half term and had spent a rather unsuccessful afternoon trying to find some records in a second had record shop. My Dad, my lovely Beatle companion, had gone back into the shop and came out again rather sheepishly. It wasn't till I got home that he handed me a carrier bag and inside was the holy of holies. The one album I was desperate to own. All Things Must Pass in almost mint condition vinyl. Up to that point, that glorious day, the most I'd heard of All Things Must Pass were a few of the "best" songs my Dad had recorded onto cassette for me. I had fallen in love instantly. Yet, I truly lost my heart to this wonderful album when I was able to listen to it in it's complete glory. Listening to the album in its entirety, I felt that I was listening to a very grown up album. The creation of All Things Must Pass started whilst ...

The White Album: Perfect In Its Imperfection

Image
Whether The Beatles admitted it, either publicly or to themselves, they must, in the early days of 1968 felt a huge amount of pressure and expectation on their shoulders. In 1967 the band released their latest album, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was an immediate hit. Even though pretty much everything The Beatles composed turned to gold, the commercial success of Sgt Peppers was stratospheric. Popular with both critics and fans alike, the album introduced songs such as Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and A Day In The Life to the world. In fact, the album is considered their opus. And that isn't just a retrospective opinion. It was a contemporary one too, with many people wondering if anything the band produced in the future could better it. Part of Sgt Peppers success was it perfectly summed up the summer of love. It reflected how society was changing. It brought colour and excitement to Britain, a country that seemed stuck in a bubble of post war greyness. It gav...

What The Beatles Mean To Me

Image
This year is a monumental Beatles year. It's the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles final album, Let It Be. It's also the 50th anniversary of the release of George Harrison's opus, All Things Must Pass. And later on in the year, hopefully, we'll see the release of Peter Jacksons renovated Let It Be Film and some anniversary releases on a par with the recent White Album and Abbey Road anniversary specials. That is, of course, if life ever gets back to normal. My late father was a Beatle addict so they have always been the background music throughout my life. As young as five or six I can recall my father playing their records when he had a rare day off. But it wasn't till I was about twelve that I fell hook, line and sinker for the Fab Four. Down came the Jason Donovan posters and up went posters of the boys. But what do they mean to me exactly? It's a question that I've often asked myself and have been asked by other people. Are they sim...

The Continuing Appeal Of Rubber Soul

Image
I once had a conversation with my late Dad who was a life long Beatle fan. We were talking about The Beatles and how their style changed - how each album was different from the previous one. He said that you never really knew what you'd be getting with each new album. I sensed, for him as well as for many people who were first generation fans, that it was a genuinely exciting time to be a music lover. When Rubber Soul was released in December 1965 it must of been quite a shock to the musical system. Released in the same year as the popular and very poppy Help! soundtrack this was the about as different to Help! as you could possibly get. For me, it was upon the release of Rubber Soul that the Beatles got really interesting. Naturally, all of the music up to this point was good. It was very good. There is no denying that. And it was popular as well. But with Rubber Soul I feel the Beatles truly coming of age, that they had something too say and were not afraid to say it in a...
